It’s Allergy Season: Time To Clean Your Air Filter

Brian Deckard • April 19, 2017

It is time for you to clean your air filter once more. Springtime usually brings with it allergens that can trigger a terrible reaction in the family. As the earth starts to bloom after the cold winter season, pollens are bound to be in abundance. Not only that, insects can also be a problem.

There are many ways for you to prevent or minimize any allergic reactions. One of them is to clean out your air filter. This is the filter that cleans the air that comes into your home. If this is dirty, you can be assured that the air circulating in your house is the same. This part of your unit will require cleaning from time to time because it catches the dirt that is brought by the air that comes into your home. Naturally, it will get dirty in time.

So how do you clean your air filter?

It really depends on what type of air conditioner you have. Usually, you will start by turning off the unit so you can remove the service panel cover where the filter is usually located. If you notice that there is a lot of fluff or dust, that is a sign that you have to clean it out. You can wash it with water. Putting it under running water will do. After it is cleaned, you can let it completely dry before returning it to the unit and closing the service panel.

Of course, there are other things that you can do to help keep allergic reactions down during the allergy season. It may not be enough to clean your air filter. You might have to do something else to ensure that your family is safe from the allergens floating in the environment. Here are some of the things that you need to do.

  • Leave your shoes outside. Or at the very least, leave them by the door. Before coming in, you have to stamp your feet on the outdoor mat so the dust and pollen that you stepped on outside will be shaken off. Skipping this part might leave a track of dust and pollen all over the house. That can trigger all sorts of allergies at home. Minimize this possibility by simply shaking them off before you enter the house.
  • Hang your coat or jacket by the door. Obviously, you should not leave your jacket outside but you should keep him by the door. Just like your shoes, this will also pick up a lot of dust and pollen outside. Do not bring it in and keep it near the door.
  • Vacuum your home regularly. It is hard to keep your whole house dust and pollen proof so the best way to really minimize allergens is to vacuum often. If possible, you can do this on a weekly basis. Remember that dead skin cells fall from our bodies as well. That can turn into dust and trigger allergies. Cleaning your house regularly is the best way to keep this from happening.

As you can see, when you clean your air filter, that is just the beginning. You need to exert more effort to keep your home free from allergens.
