After the year we’ve had, we all want 2022 to be a breath of fresh air. Bradenton’s Air America is here to ensure you and your family breathe easy in your own home all year long. It all starts with clean air-conditioning ducts.
Why Are Clean AC Ducts Important?
As property owners in southwest Florida, we tend to focus our air-conditioning concerns on the AC unit itself: Is it functioning properly and efficiently? How much electricity is it using? Is it quiet? Is it leaking moisture?
And most importantly: Is it keeping your space cool and comfortable?
But all the cool air that your AC system churns out must travel through your home’s ductwork as well. Depending on the size of your house, as well as the diameter of the ducts, this could mean that the air your AC unit filtered and decontaminated is then traveling through several dozen feet of duct before making it into the various rooms of your house.
And what is that air picking up along the way?
Dust, dirt, pest droppings, dead insects, and even human dander are common airborne contaminants that can and will settle in your ductwork. And even worse: mildew, algae, rust, and bacteria can grow in them, too.
Dirty ducts mean that every time your AC kicks on, those contaminants are being stirred up and sent into your primary living spaces. And from there? They just might end up in your lungs.
How Dirty Ducts Affect Your AC Unit
Not only are dirty ducts a breathing hazard, but they can also affect the efficiency and lifetime of your air conditioning unit.
To run efficiently—cooling your house while using the least amount of electricity—an AC unit needs the right size ducts. If ducts are too big, the air flows slower and with less force, meaning it takes longer for it to reach your rooms—if it gets there at all. Then your AC keeps working, and working too hard, to try to make up for that lack of pressure.
But ducts that are too small create too much pressure. At the very best, narrow ducts are noisy. But they can also but undue strain on your AC unit.
When debris is allowed to build up in your ductwork, it narrows the amount of space the air has to flow through, increasing air pressure. And when it’s debris that causes narrow ducts, that added pressure can then dislodge all kinds of nastiness, making your dirty ductwork a veritable dust storm in your own home.
